Of Old Wood and a Primitive Board

I just love old wood and unless completely beyond repair I can't bear the thought of throwing it away. This piece of wood was rescued from an old wood trunk that was beyond repair. The inside of the box had the most wonderful blue paint. I added a few nails to this piece and a hanger on the back to add some of my primitive black wax ornaments.

Each year Knox's Headquarters in New Windsor, N.Y. features a candlelight Christmas evening with the Ellison's.

A Bit of History

On several occasions during the Revolutionary War, Major General Henry Knox, Commander of the America artillery, established his military headquarters at John Ellison's 1754 Georgian-style house in Vails Gate. From October 1782 until the spring of 1783, as 7,000 soldiers and 500 "camp followers" were establishing winter quarters at the New Windsor Cantonment, and General Washington was lodged at Jonathan Hasbrouck's house in Newburgh, New York, Major General Horatio Gates occupied the elegant home from which he commanded the cantonment. Here the army awaited the end of the Revolutionary War that became effective when Washington issued the cease fire orders on April 19, 1783.

For most of the 18th and into the 19th century, the Ellison family had important commercial dealings in milling and trade. From their mill, flour was shipped down the Hudson River to New York City and the West Indies. At present, remains of the mill, with traces of the underground raceway may be visited. Explore how the Ellisons and other families of the mid-Hudson Valley lived 200 years ago.

I was honored when Lana invited me to be a guest blogger on her Honeysuckle Lane blog. I've admired Lana's work for years and she is one of the kindest, dearest people I know. Not only is she an incredibly talented artist but her kindness and gentle spirit sets her apart.
Thank you Lana for what you do and the joy you spread.

Mold for this new design will be available soon as a benefit to raise money for Betsy's (Foothills Primitives) daughter. A single mom, Terri had surgery on September 28 and will not likely be able to return to work until after the New Year. Details coming soon.

A new primitive Santa. He's done in chalkware (plaster), Panpastels for color and stained with a bit of coffee. I love the soft colors I'm able to achieve with Panpastels I used a bit of acrylic paint for his eyes.

Two new additions to my wax/soap mold line. Primitive Early American ornies or fabulous guest soaps.

The Creative Connection Event! Truly Inspiring

I'm not sure I can put into words how inspiring this event was. So many worked so hard to make this event a success and their hard work paid off. Nancy Soriano and Jo Packam left no detail undone right down to the beautiful table decor for the Gala Dinner and Breakfast. Darla Ambroz worked tirelessly on the Handmade Market. I met so many people I have admired for years and some fabulous new ones too.

Book signing Friday evening. Ree Drummond signed my "The Pioneer Woman Cooks"

and Amy Barickman signed her new book "Vintage Notions"

The wonderful and beatiful Sharon Andrews was attending the event! Oh my gosh!

Nancy Malay stopped by my booth to say hi, she is so sweet! It was such a honor to meet her.

Also met a Twitter friend, Heather from Olive and Ollie. She has the sweetest childrens clothing and her quilts are impeccable.

My biggest reget, not having more time to attend the classes. So many I would have loved to attend.

Fall Folk Art with Panpastels

Another work in progress using Panpastel's. I thought I'd try a small folk art design this time. Due to it's size I was apprehensive what the results would be but I was pleasantly surprised. I have the Portrait set which doesn't have the colors you see in this picture, so I mixed them to achieve the colors I wanted. Horrors, I don't have black but used a pencil for that. What is truly wonderful is if you make a mistake you can easily erase! I think I'm in love! I'll be bringing these with me to The Creative Connections Event in September.

I thought I'd try something a bit different today. I've had Panpastel's for a few months now but haven't tried them until today. I started with a pen and ink and wanted to add a bit of color. I finally broke out the Panpastel's and wow were they fun to use! So easy to blend and give just the right amount of color. No mess, no dust, just perfection. I know I'll be using them more!

Sometimes words inspire art or art inspires words. I write down words or look up quotes that inspire me on a daily basis. Courageous is the word that has spoken to me for the past few days. We all must take risks and challenge ourselves to do something we are not always comfortable with in order to grow. No matter how small the act of courage may be it is a valuable leap of faith. For me it has been going beyond my love of primitive folk art and on to something a bit more whimsical. So "Be Courageous"!

The H.M.S Bounty docked on the Hudson River today and it was a perfect spring day

to take a day off to go for a tour.

Disney construted the H.M.S bounty in 1960 for the film, "Mutiny on the Bounty". It was also

used inthe the film "Treasure Island".

She was the "Black Pearl" in the "Pirates of the Caribbean"

Directly across the river is Beacon, named to commemorate the historic beacon fires that blazed forth from the summit of the Fishkill Mountains to alert the Continental Army about British troop movements.

This is a view down the Hudson towards New York City.

West Point Military Academy

is located about ten miles from this point.

The first day of Spring is tomorrow! If you're a star gazer then don't miss the night sky tomorrow. Nature will provide with a special kind of show. Here is the link to NASA to read all about it. I'm not sure where or when this facination of the cosmos began for me. Perhaps is was with the lullaby "Twinkle, Twinkle Litte Star" or the shows I watched on television growing up, Star Trek, Lost In Space and My Favorite Martian. So tomorrow evening I'll be gazing at the Heaven and stars.

Quest for the Perfect Irish Soda Bread

Happy St Patrick's Day! I have my corned beef and cabbage cooking! Now off on my quest for the perfect Irish Soda Bread. A few weeks ago my dear friend asked my family for dinner. She baked the most wonderful Irish Soda Bread.Since all four of my Grandparent's immigrated from Ireland this recipe and picture of Mrs. O'Callaghan intrigued me. It was said my Grandmother made the most wonderful soda bread but never had a written recipe for it. This is the recipe from bon appetit for Mrs. O'Callaghan's soda bread that my friend made.
Alas, mine didn't turn out as well. After reading feedback on the site I thought I'd give this another try with a few adjustments. So here's how it went.
I substituted Odlums extra Coarse Wholemeal flour for the whole wheat flour

Cut the butter into the flour and brown sugar with the food processor.

Baked it on a pizza stone at 375 for 60 minutes

The result was perfect

I had to slice it open, just to be sure.

A crusty rustic soda bread with just the right amount of sweetness. I can't wait to have some toasted with jam for tomorrow's breakfast, if there is any left.

After four days with no power I eagerly started to work on (and finish) a few things.

Blizzard

Finally back online. Last Thursday my area got the brunt of the snow here. I'm not sure what the final totals were but I'd say at least 12" or more. We lost power Thursday evening and it wasn't restored until Monday evening. Over 150,000 thousand were without power for at least some part of those days. Hotels, restaurants and Home Depot were all very busy indeed.

We played board games by candle light, read books using the mini book lights and slept. Except for the cold it was refreshing to be totally unconnected for a bit. Now back to the real world. I did bake a nice loaf of Brown Irish Soda Bread, yummm. A nice treat after days of no power.

Adirondack Museum

I took a trip to visit the Adirondack Museum while away over the weekend. It was a gorgeous fall day, the air was crisp and the scenery was lovely . I may be prejudice but there is nothing as beautiful as upstate New York in the fall. If you live in this area or ever visit I highly recommend a visit to this museum. It really struck me that it's been less than 100 years that we have used motorized vehicles for daily transportation. How difficult it must of been for people not all that long ago to forge their way into uncivilized land to carve out a place to live and work. The museum has many of the wagons, sleighs and a fabulous private train car on display. I truly enjoy these little glimpses of our past.

Happy Birthday Betty

Today my dear mother in love would have been celebrating her 80th birthday. Much to my sadness she passed away from complications due to ovarian cancer. She was and still is an inspiration to me in many ways. She accomplished what most today would be impossible to do.
A single mother of two boys back in the 1950's and 6o's she worked everyday in the factory's that were abundent at the time. She did the same work as men at the time and was paid less for it. Her youngest son required many operations in his youth due to multiple exostoses (http://tinyurl.com/nad6m9 ), which she paid for out of her earnings. She was not highly paid, didn't receive child support and did not have the health insurance we all expect now. She wouldn't accept any public assistance, attended church every Sunday and gave what she could to others in need. She would come home after a hard day of work and take her boys fishing, youth group, camping or what ever activity she could. She was a wonderful Grandmother who always had a smile and energy but sadly did not have the time she should have to see them grow. I don't think I ever heard her complain, not once. She was content with the joy of her two sons.

A Visit from Soft in the Head
I was so thrilled that Pam from "Soft in the Head" was able to stop by and visit with me for the day on her whirlwind trip to the northeast. We talked and laughed the whole day and had so much fun. I miss her already but hubby promised me a trip to visit with her next spring. She is truly a wonderful creative spirit and kind soul.
